Peter, James, and John wanted to build a "booth" for Jesus and just stay on the mountain where His trasfiguration took place. But the Son of God, the chosen One, knew that He must instead keep moving toward His crucifixion. We, too, must rise from worship and do what we can to hasten the coming of the kingdom.
Good News! February 28, 2010 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
GENESIS 15:5-12, 17-18 / PHILIPPIANS 3:17-4:1 OR 3:20 / LUKE 9:28b-36
If you were old enough in 2001 to understand the events of 9/11, you probably remember where you were when you heard about them. Some of us have a similar recollection of the Challenger explosion. And some of us remember President Kennedy's assassination. News that huge--news that changes our world--cracks open our awareness and does something to our perceptions. We see more, and we see more clearly than usual. Life may seem bigger or seem to be in slow motion, but at the same time what we experience is very real. It's not "beyond" our awareness. It's deeper awareness--something that puts our existence in a certain place at a certain time under a magnifying glass. Consider what happened to the disciples of Jesus when He was transfigured before their eyes. He picked the friends He was closest to. Something deep and intimate is a stake for Peter, John, and James. Moses and Elijah, two of the greatest prophets and the foundations of Israel's faith and practice and its deepest hopes, were drawn into their vision. God's own voice says to all of them, this is the Chosen One--my Son. Listen. This is a pivotal point in the disciples' lives. It draws everything together: their insights into Christ's teaching and their realization of Who Christ Is. Later, Paul reminds the Philippians that Christ's disciples will be transformed too. There's more to come from the Transfiguration. The disciples don't speak about what they've seen until they experience something more--Christ's risen body and an empty tomb. On this strange day, God opens the disciples' eyes about Jesus Christ. We get a first look--at God's answer to death.

WHY DID SAUL BECOME PAUL? I know Saint Paul's name was originally Saul. Where in the Bible does it say why it changed? Leroy Dear Leroy, Saul is first called Paul in Acts 13:9: "Saul, also known as Paul." Paul was his Greek name, while Saul was his name among the Jews. However, I wouldn't say it's a name change; Scripture shows Saint Paul was called by his Jewish name, Saul, even after his conversion on the Damascus Road. Saint Luke, his close companion and the author of The Acts of the Apostles, calls Paul Saul until his ministry in Antioch. Once Saints Paul and Barnabas are sent on their ministry among the Gentiles (see Acts 13:1-2), we first see the name change in Acts 12:9. From then on, the use of Saul stops except in the three accounts of the story of his conversion (see Acts 9:1-9, 22:6-11, and 26:12-18). Notice that in the story of Paul's conversion, Jesus calls him Saul, his Jewish and familial name. The Holy Spirit also calls him Saul (see Acts 13:2). Saint Paul used his formal Greek name, Paul, among the Gentiles. Thus he never refers to himself as Saul in his letters, because his letter were written in Greek for Greek speakers in predominantly Gentile communities. Saint Paul seems to prefer Greek names. He refers to Peter as Kephas eight times in his letters, while he only calls him Peter twice (see Galatians 2:7-8).
