BISHOP BLASE CUPICH

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ

With the coming new year, the Catholic Church in English-speaking countries will be hearing a good deal about the Third Edition of the Roman Missal and the new translation of the Mass. We will begin using it on the First Sunday of Advent, the weekend of November 26-27, 2001.

The following are some samples of the changes that are about to take place. Learning and exploring this new translation of the Roman Missal will provide our diocese with a fresh opportunity to appreciate the importance and value of our worship for sustaining and expressing our Christian life and vocation. For more information on the new translation go to the Web site of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: www.usccb.org/romanmissal.

Penitential Rite:
I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do; and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord, our God.

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, and the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Before the Gospel:

All: Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.

Priest: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
All: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
